Wawa Goes to Florida: What to Expect from Models in New Markets
Katherine Dillon – Real Estate and SOS Finance Manager, Wawa, Inc.
Brian Pomykacz - Manager of Real Estate, Florida, Wawa, Inc.
Paige Stover – Senior Director of Analytics, Forum Analytics
Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, PA, in 1902. The milk business was a huge success. Today, Wawa is an all day, every day stop for fresh, built-to-order foods, beverages, coffee, and fuel services. A chain of more than 645 convenience retail stores (over 365 offering gasoline), Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Central Florida.
Ms. Dillon, Mr. Pomykacz and Ms. Stover explore the difficulties of building forecasting models from historical data for use in entirely new markets. When Wawa decided to expand to the Florida market, Forum helped design and implement a forecasting model from legacy data but with sensitivities to the unique market dynamics of this uncharted state. A candid dialog about what worked, what didn’t, and how to set expectations inside your organization under such circumstances.
